Ban on Single-Use Plastic Bags in Palo Alto

Main Info

Effective September 18, 2009, the City of Palo Alto has implemented this ban in an effort to protect natural ecosystems from plastic-bag litter and to encourage residents to switch to reusable bags, thereby reducing energy use. Staff estimates the various components of its program will reduce the city's annual carbon dioxide emissions from grocery-store bag use by 28 metric tons, or about 14.2 percent.
